Events of the Self

Events of the Self: Portraiture and Social Identity (2010) presents the work of three generations of African artists and photographers with that of modern and contemporary German photographers and is designed around three discursive frameworks: portraiture and social transition, typologies and taxonomies, and theatricality and figuration. The book includes contributions by Okwui Enwezor (ed.) as well as Kobena Mercer, Chika Okeke-Agulu, Gabriele Conrath-Scholl, and Deborah Willis.
